Hamburg Süd restores capacity, hikes Europe/ECSA rates

German container line Hamburg Süd and the Chilean carrier CCNI plan to restore capacity on service between Asia and the west coasts of Mexico and South America.

Hamburg Süd said the move was "to service recovering market volumes and to offer a more complete service package."

Starting in June the companies will operate two strings:

   • String One will utilize 11 ships with 4,200 TEUs nominal capacity with a port rotation of Yokohama, Pusan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian, Hong Kong, Manzanillo (Mexico), Lazaro Cardenas, Callao, Iquique, Puerto Angamos, Valparaiso, Lirquen, Lazaro Cardenas and Yokohama.

   • String Two will utilize 10 ships with 2,700 TEUs nominal capacity with a port rotation of Keelung, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Moji, Pusan, Manzanillo (Mexico), Buenaventura, Guayaquil, Iquique, Port Angamos-Antofagasta, Valparaiso and Keelung.

Hamburg Süd also said it is raising rates on shipments moving from Europe to the East Coast of South America.

The increase, 350 euros (about $463) per TEU, affects sailings from June 1 and applies to Hamburg Süd bookings as well as those of subsidiary Alianca.

The line said the increases comes “as a consequence of the unsatisfactory rate levels which are no longer sustainable under the present economic conditions despite our continuous efforts to reduce costs.”
