Hapag-Lloyd to Raise East Asia Rates

Hapag-Lloyd will impose a new round of general rate increases on its East Asia services, starting May 15.

The German ocean carrier said rates from East Asia to Mexico, Central America and the west coast of South America will go up by $500 per 20-foot container.

Rates on all cargo from East Asia to the Caribbean and Panama will increase by $560 per 20-foot container and $800 per 40-foot container.

From East Asia (excluding Japan) and Oceania to the Indian subcontinent, Hapag-Lloyd’s planned increase will be $300 per 20-foot container. The subcontinent region includes ports in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

From North East Asia to Australia, the carrier will push its rates up by $300 per 20-foot container. The North East Asia region covers Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Meanwhile, Singapore-based liner operator APL said it will apply a port congestion surcharge on reefer cargo from India to Haiphong, Vietnam. Effective April 21, the proposed surcharge will be $300 per 40-foot container.
