BMI to cut UK domestic services

Lufthansa-owned BMI British Midland is to cut some domestic UK flights from London Heathrow airport after it posted a GBP38 million Q1 2010 operating loss.

The second-largest airline at Heathrow, it says it will reduce frequencies on routes including Edinburgh, Glasgow and BelfastCity and use the slots to feed European destinations that act as 'hubs' for Lufthansa and its partners in the Star Alliance.

The airline already has reduced capacity by one fifth, removed 10 aircraft from its fleet and is targeting GBP100m in annual cost cuts and continued job losses.
