Europe's Channel Tunnel may be opened up to freight and mail services at night, when it sits almost idle.
Brussels-based Carex already has run a test train from France into St Pancras, the London terminus for Eurostar Group's passenger express services.
It says each train could be configured to carry 120 metric tons of parcels - equal to seven B737 freighters - and would compete in both the express next-day delivery market and in three-day deliveries where lower cost is the chief priority.
John Smith, managing director of Eurotunnel's GB Railfreight cargo unit said: "As time rolls on with the green agenda, problems at airports and the capacity that these trains can offer, the economics are going to swing in its favour."
