Jacksonville Container Volume Gained 10 Percent

The volume of containers handled by the Port of Jacksonville increased 10 percent to a record of 826,580 20-foot equivalent container units in fiscal 2010 ended Sept. 30, the Jacksonville Port Authority said.

Throughput was a record for the second year in a row and marked a decade of consistent growth in port earnings.

Container volume through the port grew 19 percent during the last two years, and Jaxport was one of a handful of U.S. ports to see container increases in 2009.

The number of vessels serving Jaxport rose to a record 1,947 during the fiscal year.

The port handled nearly 519,000 vehicles, a 24 percent increase from last year. Jaxport remains the number two vehicle-handling port in the nation.

Total tonnage for the port was up 10 percent this year, with 8.1 million tons moved. Breakbulk cargoes jumped 28 percent over last year to 990,000 tons.

Bulk cargoes remain affected by the economic downturn with 1.5 million tons moved through Jaxport, a decrease of 11 percent.

Unaudited financial statements show revenue reached a record $51.2 million, up 6 percent over the record $48.4 million achieved in fiscal 2009.
