Doha-based Qatar Airways Cargo will add a second A300-600 freighter service to Sharjah from 29 October and has also added flights to Abu Dhabi.
The network expansion follows increased capacity on other Middle East routes including a fourth frequency to Bahrain and a third frequency to Kuwait.
Commodities such as machinery/construction/high tech equipment/perishables and high end consumer items will be carried on these routes.
This year alone, eight freighter destinations have been launched, namely: Seoul, Johannesburg, Karachi (re-launch), Muscat, Budapest, Erbil, Amman and Tripoli as Qatar tries to position Doha as a major logistics hub.
The cargo handled at Doha International airport has been increasing year-on-year and is expected to rise further when the airline moves to a new cargo complex at the new Doha International Airport (NDIA). NDIA is made up of seven facilities covering 292,000m2 and will have the capacity to handle 1.4 million tons of cargo per year.
NDIA is running well behind schedule and is now expected to open late next year.
